5 Tips for a Successful Virtual Interviews

Video interviews are popular these days. This week we are posting daily tips for success:

Tip #1: Pay Attention To Your Background

Don’t compete with your background during your video interview. It will be hard for the interviewer to focus on your skills if your background is too ‘busy’. Make sure the wall behind you is appropriate and not a view of your bathroom door open (its happened).

Have a small space and nothing that says ‘business professional’ for your background? You are in luck, you can create a virtual background for skype, zoom and most other conference providers. If you aren’t comfortable with using a virtual background, then remove items from one wall. A blank wall will work.

Tip #2: Dress for Success

The saying ‘dress for the job you want’ applies to zoom interviews too. It’s true that no will see if you are wearing ripped jeans or sweat pants, but the psychological effect of dressing completely will give you more confidence and in turn make a better virtual impression. Other traps: Avoid stripes, patterns, all black or all white. Don’t wear colors that blend with your background.

Tip #3: Turn on gallery view

By using the ‘Gallery View’ you are able to see everyone in the interview at once, instead of just the person speaking. To turn that on, click the tab that says "Gallery view" in the top right corner. If the meeting has 49 or fewer attendees, you'll see all of their screens displayed on one page. If there are more, you'll have the option to move between multiple pages. Let’s just hope that you aren’t interviewing with more than 49 people at once!. It can be easily toggled back by clicking "Speaker view" in that same top right corner.

Tip #4: Where Do You Look?

During video interviews, where do you look, the camera or the person on the screen? It depends. While you are talking, be sure to look at the camera. It provides eye contact for the interviewer. Look at the screen when the interviewer is speaking.

Tip #5: Turn on the beauty filter

Zoom’s ‘Touch Up My Appearance’ feature is quick and easy. The filter smooths over your appearance much like the ‘beauty mode’ of smart phone cameras. To turn it on, click the up arrow next to Start Video. Click Video Settings, and under My Video, check the box for Touch Up My Appearance.
